Finishing Watercolors

I am finishing up some watercolors that have been on my table for a few days. The Mason jar with Tootsie Pops is done, I think. Painting a jar, or anything glass, has its set of problems- but a jar with something inside is a whole new problem. Hopefully, I got the highlights right so it looks like glass and just enough of the aqua color without too much! Sometimes I just like a white background on my still life paintings. Also, if I keep working at it- I will just overdo it and not like it. I am also finishing up a watercolor for my mom. Her house was broken into last summer, and one of the things they took was her set of sterling- and her mom's set that was the same pattern. She had a few cocktail forks that weren't put away in the box, so she still has them. She isn't replacing the silver since it is ridiculously expensive now, but I wanted her to have something to remember it by. I started drawing the fork, and knew it wasn't enough - that is where the strawberry comes in. Her silver pattern is beautiful- Towle Old Colonial- and you will be able to see the whole piece when I post it.
I should be done with that one in the next day or so- next time I sit down to paint. Today is stained glass and tomorrow is oil painting day. Hopefully I should be able to post it soon.
Thanks for looking!
Sheryl

  1. Hi Sheryl,

Your paintings are beautiful. I thought the strawberry was a real object laying close to your paintings when I first looked at it! So sorry to hear about your Mom's silver :-( life is just not fair sometimes.

As is that strawberry - at a quick glance I thought it was real too. Great watercolours, Sheryl. xx

  5. Love the fork with the strawberry Sheryl! I think I might have a silverplate pattern from Towle too. I love how silver looks and it seems you've captured it.

  7. I'm so glad that I stopped over here on your blog (having come from the 100 Paintings Challenge blog) to hear 'the rest of the story' about this painting of the Tootsie Pops and other paintings in process. Your images are so fun - colorful and realistic. They put me in touch with many memories. So fun to visit.

Your sketch of the silver fork will certainly be a family treasure. How unfortunate that the rest of the set was stolen. I can't wait to see your finished sketch.

FYI for Christmas I had a special bracelet made for my mom using the ends of 2 silver spoons of her pattern (the crafts person buys used silver for the bracelets so we didn't have to use ours). Even though Mom still has her silver, she doesn't use it as she lives alone. I thought the bracelet would be a nice memory of the enjoyment that she and my Dad got over the years when they entertained. We both just love how the bracelet came out. Just another idea for preserving the memory.

  9. I LOVE the jar of tootsie pops!! It is so bright and cheerful. :) And I think glass is super difficult, and you've made it look easy. I also like what I can see of the strawberry and fork, it looks like a beautiful pattern.

  12. Crystal- thank you! I am hoping that glass painting will get easier and easier...now if I could just stop being afraid of faces and get comfortable with portraits like the amazing ones you do!

    Gretchen, help yourself!
